EXPERIMENTAL STUDY ON WOUND CONTRACTION IN SIALADENECTOMIZED RATS
Minn Kyung-Won

Abstract
We have studied on wound contraction of full thickness open wounds in sialadenectomized rats.

Sialadenectomized rats(n=30) and controls(n=24) had excision of a standard sized rectangular full thickness skin and panniculus carnosus.

Rats without salivary glands showed a slower rate of wound contraction than controls (p£¼0.001). However, this delay in wound contraction was abolished if sialadenectomized rats were caged with rats having intact salivary glands.

In conclusion, salivary glands contain a factor(s), largely applied by licking, which accelerate(s) early wound contraction.
